Reminder

Due to letter grades being brand new to 3rd grade students this year, any student that received an 80% or lower on an assessment in the first and second quarter was able to make corrections in order to improve their grade. We have now started the third quarter and want to encourage your child to develop good study habits and prepare for assessments in advance. For this reason, the opportunity to make corrections to improve a letter grade is no longer available. Making corrections at home though is still a great way for your child to take another look at specific questions and reflect upon their learning.

Week of January 30

Reading- We are continuing our work on a Tomie de Paola story titled Little Grunt and the Big Egg. Students have enjoyed reading this story as well as many other Tomie de Paola books. The class has been looking at the strategy of self-questioning during reading to aid in our comprehension. We will also be looking at the skill of word relationships such as antonyms, synonyms, multiple meanings, etc. Third graders will practice an extended response to prepare for ISAT testing.

Writing- Students have finished their persuasive writing pieces and are now working on their research. All notes have been taken, and students are beginning to organize their notes so that they can develop sentences and paragraphs.

Math-
3rd Grade- Students will be assessed on Unit 6 on Wednesday 2/1 and then begin Unit 7.
Math Accel- Students were assessed last Friday 1/27 and will be starting Unit 7-Fractions and Their Uses; Chance and Probability on Monday 1/30.

Spelling- Students will be assessed on Wed. on their spelling words.

Rocket Math-Our class started Multiplication Rocket Math last week. A new list of multiplication levels with the corresponding facts went home last week.

Science- We learned about the desert habitat last week by watching videos, reading books, and taking notes. Now on to the forest!

All 3rd Grade classes are beginning to prepare for ISAT testing in March. You may go to the Illinois Board of Education website to see samples of the questions your child may be asked. There are also practice problems that they can do. Please use caution when having your child complete these though. Sometimes too much practice is not a good thing and children are left feeling anxious and burnt out before the testing even occurs.
